POST PRODUCTION
Collaborating with David on his website was like a real-life enactment of his music. The email conversations, birthing of ideas and the rhythmic periods between responses were akin to voices, improvisations and tempo.
There was something very beautiful about it; the way in which we were able to extend our corporeal self-expressions using micro machines fascinates me tremendously.
It is this same beauty that I sense in David's work. While I have always admired David's general artistic sensibilities, I enjoy the most his beautiful abstractions that are effortlessly human and machine at the same time. First with Stabil and followed up with Automne Fold, his music progressively complicates Raster Noton's electronic asceticism. Within his constructs, I sense the artist's desire to sculpt pristine machines into man's chaotic image - a self-expression that is made at the expense of a unifying ideology.
My work is a direct response to David's music. I wanted a visual object whose presence is achieved by way of its internal logic, and that is devoid of any symbolic meaning. Hence I subjected my corporeality (image simulations of my hand) upon an abstract system (the grid) where I would be free to derive a visual result by solely focusing on attributes of colour, tonality, shapes and form.
